Inspiration...

It's just too hot to do anything but sit under a fan and get some computer work done, so I thought I would share some photos we took last weekend... and I'd like to say a special thank you to Sandi, for the sweet card and darling tag she sent as a thank you for winning my recent Crown giveaway! What a very nice thing for you to do!

New Friends & a Giveaway

Wendy at Farmhouse Accessories is featuring a bunch of people on her blog this week, whilst she is enjoying her vacation, and today she's talkin' about me and Retreat! She's 'introducing' me to her friends and I am so grateful that she is! It's always such fun to meet new people and share more blogs... just what we need, huh? MORE inspiring blogs to browse when we are supposed to be working! LOL

PLUS Wendy has announced a Giveaway of one of my newest creations - a Sea Queen Crown. I'm sending one off to her, and she'll give it away to one very lucky reader.
Perhaps you have a little sweetheart like Seanna above, who'd just love her own Sea Queen (or Princess, as the case may be) Crown....or maybe you have a friend you could give it to! Visit Wendy's blog to enter the giveaway!

Oh, and can I ask for your feedback on something? I'm considering doing something new... Would you be interested in purchasing my Sea Queen and Junk Queen crowns via my blog or on etsy? Let me know.... and thank you!

I Saw Jesus at the Farmer's Market on Saturday.....

I did, I swear! Check him out, handing out loaves of bread!

The guy with the fishes was across the street....

So, we visited our old stomping grounds at the Edmond's Street Market. (Oi, how much schlepping and hauling did we do at this show in the old days?!)

Then we went a few blocks East to visit our friend Todd Waddell (visual merchandising GENIUS, if I haven't said that in print before) and his lovely store, Bountiful Home. (No, not THAT Bountiful Home. Sue Balmforth owns that one in Venice, California. This one is decidedly smaller and less Hollywood!) His store and events are cream of the crop stuff, every detail tended to.

We walked thru his lovely little shop into the backyard and ...... Ahhhhhhhh..... perfection. Stopped right smack in the center of the stairs to snap this photo! Then Todd offered his famous welcoming hugs, making us practically feel like visiting royalty. (Which he does for EACH and every visitor....) What a host!

We were thrilled by the beauty and the perfect day (ominous thunderclouds notwithstanding...) and visited some of our favorite creative friends:

Patricia, of Tippy Stockton Designs, had another GORGEOUS booth, just like at Funky Junk Sisters, filled with her charming jewelry and artwork. And she is just the sweetest girl!

Beth and Lisa of Salvage Studio were there, with a plethora of incredibly creative ideas and products made from reclaimed, recycled, reinvented STUFF. I am always inspired by them! Raoul, Beth's hubby was there, lurking in the shade, with a twinkle in his eye as he watched the stuff selling - which meant it wasn't going back home to his house!!!! ;0)

Bob wandered around snapping amazing photos like this of the marvelous plants & flowers all over the yard - to be expected, since Todd was the visual director at Ravenna Gardens (sniff, miss their stores) for years, after being with Nordy's visual department for a lifetime. (Even tho he doesn't look a day over 30. Really. Disgusting.) He is amazingly talented - legendary, even - and yet so likeable. And he's blushing right now as he reads that!! Apparently, he's been harangued into speaking at the Pacific Market Center for the Seattle Gift Show next month. (Long story, ask him HIS version of it!) But he doesn't have a blog.

Do I need to 'bully him into blogging' as Coleen calls it?! I know we'd all love to see photos and read his decor tips. Heck, just his loyal tribe of hug-loving women would enjoy it, let alone the throngs of decor devotee's that he'd reach. So, Todd, I know you are reading this..... what do you say? Let me design a blog for you, so you can fill it up with wonderful inspiration for all of us out here in Blogland! Beth, Lisa... help me out here....

UPDATE!!! Todd jumped into the pool feet first - go here to visit his brand new blog! And I didn't have to bully him, after all!

Eight Thousand Words

...just a few more images from the BarnHouse show, and a few sweet birds on our farm last week. If it's true that a picture is worth a thousand words, these speak volumes. Have a lovely day!

Anni Banani Celebrates a Birthday

Today is my sweet Anni's Birthday! The baby of the family is 23.... now how did that happen?

She was to be named Danielle, but I just couldn't imagine such a petite girl going thru life as a 'Danni'. So at the last minute, I named her Brianna - thinking she'd be nicknamed 'Bri'. Her big brother Joel just couldn't get the 'BR' part right, so he called her 'Yanni' - and she's been 'Anni' ever since! And due to her childhood love of bananas, the tag 'Anni Banani' will haunt her her entire life. ;0)

Add her gorgeous auburn hair to that name and there were people who thought I named her after Orphan Annie. (Come on, what mother would DO that?!!!!)

Happy Birthday, darlin'....... I know this year will bring you wonderful things!

Reflecting

I had a moment on Sunday, after the show was over and the crowds were gone, to saunter up to the Boys' house and snap a few shots. I tried to capture the spirit of their home in the small vignettes they have designed in every nook and cranny. And as lovely as they are, I can't show you the whole room or house, because that is their place. I feel like it would be an invasion of their privacy to do that. Hopefully these photos here convey the spirit... the mood... the overall sense of repose that their home embodies. It captivated me. It just.....well, it spoke to me.

Indeed, it spoke to me so softly and sweetly that in one split second I went from leaning in to snap a shot of something amazing to needing to immediately sit down and breathe and let the tears flow. I was awash in appreciation for the chance to be there at that moment, fresh from the success of the previous day's show and sleeping in a grassy meadow. Sitting here was restorative, relaxing, and inspiring. It calmed me, yet stirred within me the energy to be more expressive in my own home's decor. Every item within the very walls here express Joe & Jermonne's personalities.

I was overwhelmed with the realization that I am surrounded by people who dream big dreams, who 'change their stars' (as Heath Ledger's character's father said in the film 'A Knight's Tale') and who manifest those dreams into reality. And I realized again that I am one of them. And that unlike in the past, I don't have to be scared that my big dreams won't be realized or that someone can take them from me. I needn't make excuses or be ashamed or belittled or misunderstood or laughed at any more for my big ideas and dreams and visions. Why? Because the people who are in my life NOW are people who also do this, and understand it, and know that life can be a passionate adventure. Joe and Jermonne are definitely those kind of people.

I was overcome with appreciation and gratefulness that people like Joe & Jermonne exist in this world. That they not only possess incredible talent and creativity, but that they share it so openly and generously with their friends & family - a family of genuine, caring, funloving people that they have gathered, drawn together, and continue to expand. That we were invited to participate in this show, and were welcomed into their lives, home, and circle is just such a blessing to us. We never felt like 'newcomers' to this world, but like old friends returning for a reunion - just as Jermonne predicted. I think Kim said it best when she tearfully, and very genuinely, expressed her gratefulness for this island of friendship and acceptance of anyone who enters. Like-minded spirits connect here in this circle (whether it is on the BarnHouse farm or not) and that is a remarkable experience for us all.

What a wonderful time. A beautiful setting. A resplendent event. And an altogether delectable gathering of people who inspire and delight my senses at every turn. I am still weepy over the magic that dances within my soul and the joy in my heart that blossomed this weekend. I am truly blessed to live this life.....

Details, Details, Details.....

I know, I've been 'absent' from the Bloggiverse for almost a week. But I'm not sorry! I took a sort of self-imposed sabbatical from technology - blogging, emailing, even phone calls - for the duration of our trip down to the BarnHouse show. As a matter of fact, the only tech-ie thing I had around me at all was my camera. (As did everyone ELSE there! Too much to miss!)

I just wanted to live in the moment, enjoy the people and soak in the atmosphere & inspiration, without thinking to myself 'I'm SO blogging this!' and then hurrying to share it. Not that I don't plan to share things! Oh my YES, I will! But for this first day, when I am on 're-entry' after an early-morning arrival back here at Retreat Farm, I'm going to keep it really simple.

Our hosts, the Kings of DETAIL with a capital everything. Joe & Jermonne are kind, sweet, generous, patient, giving, caring, men with hearts of gold and laughter that is contagious. Their farm is a little bit of paradise and their home.... well, let's just say I melted when I walked into it. Perfection. These are two creative geniuses who inspire me like no other. I can't wait to see what is coming next for them, and let's just say they deserve all the good things that do come!
Our 'Taj Mahal' tent (also known as the 'Retreat Estate') that was our home away from home for four days. We had fun with it, and it made our long hard workdays in 95 degree heat bearable. I totally understand the concept of a mid-day 'Siesta' now, because there is nothing else you can do when it is that hot!!! Working early mornings and late nights was the norm.... sleep? Ah, who needs sleep?! The reactions we heard about our tent decor were SO very nice, and there are photos of it popping up all over blogdom, and we so appreciate that. Some comments & situations were a bit funny - a few made us laugh out loud! I put more photos about it up on our Retreat blog. And finally, our space inside the barn.... we were so honored to have had Joe & Jermonne decide to put us in the main location. I hope our results did justice to their vision for the show. I'll be sharing more photos of our one of a kind furnishings & decor items this week, on our Retreat blog. For now, I have things to catch up with, two articles to write, another show to book on our schedule, our store displays to design, and hundreds of photos to edit & emails to wade through! See you soon!

3..2..1...

It's almost here... Saturday's Flea Market show is destined to go down in the books. Joe & Jermonne, the Boys of BarnHouse, have set the stage and invited a buncha' people for fun, fun, fun, work, work, work, and party, party, party! We can't wait!

We are finishing up last-minute goodies and loading the trailer today. I hope it all fits in there... see, there's product. Lots and lots of product. And then.... there's the GLAMPsite stuff. Our 'encampment' will be decidedly glamorous, yes, and also comfy. This girl likes her luxury, and 'roughing it' is NOT in my vocabulary. (The last time I actually 'camped' was in the nineties. It was with four kids, a dog, and a tent. In the Northwest, where rain is inevitable. Need I say more?)

Anyway, what with all of the last-minute prep and travel and setting up said GLAMPsite, and the questionable availability of electricity and internet service, my blog posts are gonna' be few and far between for awhile. I'll do my best to get some setup photos up, to incite you to come to the show! But know that I may just require a trip into MacD's to do so.....can't you just picture me at one o'clock AM, sitting in a booth at Mickey D's, sucking down a sweet tea and typing myself silly while Bob sleeps in the truck? Yeah. Me, too......

Full Speed Ahead...

Can you see grammy in the background, trying to keep up with speedster Troy?!!! We crossed this bridge over and over and over.... it's at the Lavender Hills Farm lavender farm not too far from us. They had a festival this weekend so we wanted to visit and check it out. And, since it's located just a few blocks from where Mommie works, we met her there to give the little guy back after he spent Friday night with us. (He was an angel, as usual!)

We all had a few hours of fun enjoying the sun, exploring a new place, walking among the lavender plants (trying not to get stung by bees) and tried some vanilla lavender & lemon lavender ice cream, too. Our friends MaryBeth & Julie from Poppyseeds had a booth in the antique & art faire there so we visited them, and Mr. Troy pulled his bashful act. Thirty seconds later, he was showing off dancing to the live music... you just never know what to expect.....

We are full speed ahead, too, finishing up projects and getting ready to load up for next weekend's BarnHouse Flea Market show. Crazy busy week ahead!

Happy Birthday, Buffy!

Today is my beautiful daughter Bethany's birthday, and her hubby has semi-secret plans to take her out for a night on the town to celebrate. You know what that means, right? Yep. Mr. Troy is comin' to Grammy & Grampy's house again! YAY!

One of the most amazing things about Beth is what a great mommy she is. I am so awed by her total focus on her son and how even the smallest things don't escape her notice. She's a funloving mom who loves to play with her little man, and I admire that. I should have done a lot more of that when my kids were small.....

She's also an incredibly talented singer. I hear her sing to her son and think to myself that she should be on Idol, but that isn't what she wants. Her voice is pure magic... I spent all of her childhood listening to her sing in church and school choirs, at jazz festivals and solo competitions, always left speechless by her talent. From grade shcool to high school, her lilting voice echoed through our home and raised our spirits.

I will never forget a special birthday gift that Beth gave me: she sang a solo rendition of 'When I Fall In Love' at a jazz concert that happened to be held on my birthday. It was a total surprise to me, and when she dedicated it to me and began to sing my very favorite song, well, I was a puddle on the floor of the auditorium. I don't think she has any idea how much that meant to me - then or now.

Thank you, Bethy, for all of the music, love and laughter you have brought to our family since the hot summer day you were born in Beverly Hills. Ahem. There's a family joke there: Beth hates the town she was born in, and has fabricated another story more to her liking. (And yes, dear, you were born to us. You are not an orphan that we adopted, as your older sister likes to tell you.) sigh.

Dumpster Diving Diva

Yep. I am a proud, card-carrying member of the DDD club. My friend Sue Kirby and I have never actually junked together (running willy-nilly through trade shows in search of cool stuff ot use in our seminar displays doesn't quite qualify), but stories of our individual adventures are eerily similar. We've compared notes and swapped anecdotes on stage and on the phone, both openly and covertly admired each other's finds, and encouraged legions of others to join us in our constant pursuit of the treasure that is another man's (or woman's) trash. I still think we need to form our own sisterhood and have covert midnight dumpster raids, but we're just too darned busy.

One of the goodies I flaunt at Sue is the darling chair shown above. I've used it in many ways in on-stage display setups in my seminars over the years, and Sue keeps threatening to steal it from me! The funny part is, when I move this chair in my home or even just catch a glance of it, I think of Sue! I wonder how she'd feel to know that a piece of bonafide garbage reminds me of her? (She'd probably love it!)
The folding wood lawn chair has two loose lower rungs and a seat that isn't very strong - so it's not used to sit on. Last week, I sat it in our entry and perched one of my straw summer hats on it (sort of a silent barrier to prevent anyone who comes in from sitting on it). I took photos and then....well, you know how that goes. Today, I got a message on my phone from Sue, and I remembered this post. (Can I also just say that she is one of those friends who calls out of the blue after two months or so, and the first thing she does is say something completely profound that relates to EXACTLY what it is I am involved in/dealing with/getting over at any given moment? I don't know how she does that. ESP? Divine Providence? Hidden Cameras?! It always encourages me, even if it does freak me out a bit...)

Anyway, the story of this darling chair is that many years back when I was working as a staff visual stylist at a garden & home center, my cohort Karen and I went to take a cart full of trash to the waste bin. You had to go up a ramp to dump stuff in, and when I did, I looked down into the dumpster - and there she was. Just sitting there, in her vintage white glory, on top of a pile of discarded dead plants and packing plastic. Looking for all the world like she was thinking (if chairs could think....) 'How in the hell did I end up here?'. There's an allegory there, trust me, but I'm not feeling particularly introspective right now so I'll let it go.

ANYway, I know my eyes popped out of my head because Karen suddenly got a worried look on her face and asked me what was wrong..... and without an answer, I jumped INTO the dumpster to retrieve my treasure. I held it up triumphantly over my head and said 'Can you BELIEVE that someone would throw this OUT?!'. I don't think I've ever seen Karen laugh that hard, before or since. I truly revealed myself as a bonafide wacko that day, and the term 'talkin' trash' took on a whole new meaning in our conversations!

In any case, my darling chair went home with me, got a bath, and has been cheering up my home, client displays, and presentation stages for many years now. Plus providing some fun memories every time I look at her. I'm not sure if chairs purchased at discount superstores can offer that much value...which is why I shop at 'back alley boutiques' - aka dumpsters. ;0)

Friends, what is your best thrifted or junked find?!

Sound the Fanfare!

Let the drum rolls, trumpet trills, and musical fanfares commence... It's time to announce the WINNERS of my Third Bloggiversary Giveaway Drawing!

Who else would I have draw names for each crown but Mr. Deb?! I must share that he needed some cajoling to do this. He said he's been 'blog fodder' enough, now why does he have to get involved with the giveaway?!!! This man just cracks me up, I tell ya'. Was it just too 'foofy' for him, with the crowns? I dunno. But in the end, I got what I wanted - he drew three names. With his eyes closed. And then he fell promptly asleep. (He's snoring next to me as I type this...)
And so without further ado, I offer my hearty congratulations and a bow of genuflection to their Royal highnesses, the WINNERS:

The Junk Queen Crown: Sandi
The Junk Princess Tiara: Sue
The Mini Princess Crown: Angela

Congratulations, girls! If your Majesties will be so kind as to email me at Debi.WardKennedy (at) Gmail (dot) com, to provide me with your mailing address and also your complete name, I will get these lovely prizes packed and wrapped and sent on their way to you!

My most sincere thanks to each and every one of you who entered, commented, followed, and participated in my little giveaway. Summer Shells & Memories

You know it's summer at my house when the seashells go on display. I've collected them for years, from all over the place, and love finding new ways to show them off during the warm months of summer. I fill glass vases with them, as above...
I've nestled pillar candles down into glass vases filled with shells, and lined them up on a simple muslin runner on my dining tableIn the center of all of those vases is this BIG glass dome. It fits over a round platter that I have, making it a perfect place to display special things all year long. Right now, it showcases a 'Found Treasures' NeSt I made last Labor Day, when Bob & I stayed at Cama Beach.
Another big dome with pedestal and several smaller domes gather on the buffet (um, yes.... she's back in the dining room. I sold my black buffet at Farm Chicks, and when we came home I decided that Miss Phoebe Buffet really looks better here than in my room....). The bowls under the domes hold assorted shells that I gather on our beach walks. I didn't gather these starfish on a beach walk, but they do look lovely with the oyster shells that I found recently on our shores. Bob says if I collect only five shells a day on our walk, by September the beach will be bare! Now that we live here at the beach, I think I may just leave the shells out all year. I could even do an all-white Christmas tree with seashells!
My summer decorating is completed with the placement of one very special item: This photo of my kids, circa 1994. We had just moved to Washington State, and discovered Mukilteo Beach. Our family made a habit of visiting it often (it was about 45 minutes from home) and one day, a huge log had washed up onto the beach. The kids all started climbing on it, and this photo op presented itself. It is my absolute favorite photo of my four children.

I have vowed to reproduce that photo one day with all of their spouses and children in it, too. (I think it will be on one of our lovely beaches here on the island, though.... perhaps we'll do it next summer, when Bob & I renew our vows for our 30th Wedding Anniversary!) I'm sure we'll collect lots of shells, too.....

And don't forget, Monday July 6th at midnight PST is the deadline to enter my Anniversary Giveaway!
